John MacArthur, in The MacArthur Study Bible, helps us understand what Jesus meant when He says, "Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life:"
Jesus' point was an analogy that has spiritual, rather than literal, significance: just as eating and drinking are necessary for physical life, so also is belief in His sacrificial death on the cross necessary for eternal life. The eating of His flesh and drinking of His blood metaphorically symbolize the need for accepting Jesus' cross work.
One practical way to apply this is verse to to feed on God's Word (the Bible). (see John 1:1-3)
